Autumn portrait by Iza Łysoń

I have a soft spot for this dog. And I can’t do anything about it, even though it wasn’t supposed to be like this. Really. I have a quite pragmatic approach towards owning animals, so the plan was that I am looking for dog- a companion, such that I could grab it, place it in front of any waterfall without any problems. One that yes, will share its life with me but… separately. Not besides me but just… on the other side of the camera. Without excess emotions. And I don’t really know where all of it blew up. Instead of an alien, grown up puppy I started seeing in her my best buddy. I thought about all of that while looking at this shot. Just regular, simplest autumn portrait, with which I have fallen completely in love, because it shows Opi the way I like her the most- with ideally spread out ears, closed mouth and a spark in her eye. And I started wondering how it impacts my work- is it a plus, that I am showing a picture that evokes some emotion or a minus- because I can forgive those shots much more flaws, for example non-ideal sharpness or this utter simplicity. It even happens so that in such shots I omit something in post, because I’m in such a hurry to show the world something that I adore. Good is the enemy of Great, Perfectionism may be the enemy of productivity. What about photographic pragmatism? Do you publish only your objectively best work or also the pictures that have a history, but maybe are not perfect?
