Duel with a dragon by Marsel van Oosten
This is the time when people make their New Year’s resolutions: I’m gonna lose weight, I’m gonna exercise more, I’m gonna step up my game, etc. If you’re one of those rare people who actually achieve your New Year’s resolution each year, congratulations. According to U.S. News & World Report, the failure rate for New Year’s resolutions is said to be about 80 percent, and most lose their resolve by mid-February. My New Year’s resolution won’t fail. It actually already started last month: Daniella and I decided a long time ago that we were going to have a six-month sabbatical starting half December 2019. The past couple of years, we have been running and gunning virtually nonstop. Highlights were the D850 and the Z7 introduction campaigns I shot for Nikon, winning the overall title in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year awards, our new photo tour to Iran, and my Dragon Blood project in Yemen. It’s been a long and exciting ride, but it’s time to take a breath. I will continue where I left off – my expedition to Socotra, Yemen. This image features the main reason why I wanted to visit this island so badly: the dragon blood tree. It was shot just after sunrise on top of a plateau. In the short documentary ‘Dragon Blood’, you can see me shooting this image: www.squiver.com/socotra/ Good luck with your New Year’s resolutions, make it a good year!
