I just wrapped up a week wandering around Colorado photographing fall colors and chasing the light. I’ll be going through the images for quite some time, but here is the first one I will be sharing, which also came on the last evening of the trip. This was one particular area I have wanted to see and explore in Colorado for the longest time. Finally having the chance to see with my own eyes the beauty of the landscape definitely made me want to stay. This location in particular has been rather iconic as it is often referred to as “True Grit” due to the movie filmed here. With a handful of other photographers lined along the road waiting to get the shot, I wandered through the trees hoping to find some unique compositions. When I stumbled out of the trees back toward the meadow, a few aspen trees were framing chimney rock. A nice little creek winded it’s way around the meadow and I set up my tripod and waited for a break in the clouds. While waiting, a group of ranchers had set up camp towards the left side of the frame and let out their horses from the trailer. They remained to the side the majority of the time, but I had a feeling they may wander towards the center of the meadow, and sure enough when the light burst through the clouds and lit up the ridge and aspens, the horses were right where I wanted them. It was almost a too good to be true scene, and would have been even better had they been wild horses, but I’ll take it!
