Amused To Death by The Narratographer

If there are no words, we cannot write. If we cannot write, we’ve no need to think. If we do not think, we can never explain. If we can’t explain, we never realise we are enslaved. If we do not know we are enslaved, we will never revolt. If we never revolt, we will never be free. This is how life works, it keeps us stupid. Human stupidity is a necessity for the machine to function. If they can keep us intoxicated and powerless, we are nothing more than lambs and the system keeps working. And isn’t language everything we feel and think? Isn’t everything written an extension of ones truest desires and beliefs? What does that say about modern society, that we think and feel nothing more than a text message full of truncated words, simply because we couldn’t be bothered? No one can be bothered, and the lie is that they think it is because they don’t have time. We have more time than we ever have had. It is supposed to be all about connecting, yet we have never been so disconnected. But we aren’t quite that stupid, we know when we are being lied to. Well, we would if it wasn’t for our desperate need for distraction. We seek amusement, every moment of our lives. This is the age of information and we are deliberately bombarded with more than we can process. Nearly every television show is something that will exchange the learning or enlightenment process for nothing more than pure distraction. Watching people just like you and I become famous for a moment, or making fools of themselves, showing you that one day, it could be you on the tv. The is part of how it all works. To coin a phrase from a true prophet, “Power is in tearing human minds to pieces and putting them together again in new shapes of your own choosing.” I wonder what Eric Arthur Blair would have made of social media? So we go about our days, looking for amusement on YouTube, or Facebook, or somewhere else on the Internet. We are being amused to death. Instead of turning and making a friend of the stranger sat besides us on the train, we are all seated there like battery hens, our distraction devices our only interaction. We are killing time and brain cells in unison. I don’t know about you, but nearly all of my life-affirming moments happened before the dawn of the social media. Seeing it relies on people being physically apart, what is so social about it anyway? It is about advertising your life, your supposed happiness, your success. It is nothing more than a CV, full of lies and ego. People will always choose happiness over freedom. PS – and yes, I am a hypocrite. I am writing this on the internet! To be honest, all our other avenues have been closed off.
