www.squiver.com Mist in Deadvlei is a rare thing. In over a decade of visiting this surreal place, I’ve had mist only five times. So when it happens, you have to move fast. This was shot on the same morning as the black and white series that won me First Prize in the Travel Photographer of the Year. I’ve been here so many times, that when I saw there was mist, I knew exactly which compositions I wanted to shoot, and I managed to shoot them all within an hour or so. I was literally running from the one spot to the other, spending under ten minutes on each shot – which for me amounts to warp speed. I figured I had maybe ten more minutes to go before the mist would melt away, and I decided to set up for one more shot that I had never seen before: a 180 degree panorama in the mist. The result is a lot more cluttered than all my other Deadvlei images, but I like it quite a bit. Instead of a careful composition of a handful of trees, it shows Deadvlei as the haunted forest of the dead it actually is. The mist just puts it over the top.
