instagram.com/the_blurred_lens Being from Texas, yeahawwww, I am always biased toward thinking the hill country is one of the most beautiful places God ever created. After spending the last few years out here in Arizona, I think number 48 can give us a run for our money. It’s really hard to beat the sunsets and all the wonderful mountains in this part of the country. I had a chance to go spend sometime wondering around the Grand Canyon and I decided to stop by Horseshoe Bend. For those who don’t know, Horseshoe Bend is part of the canyon where the Colorado River makes a perfect bend and you are able to walk up to the edge. Keep in mind, the edge is a 1,000 foot drop straight down. Not for the faint of heart. When I got to the bend, I was amazed at the number of people who were here. There were literately hundreds of people wondering around the edge of the canyon. If I had a dollar for every person with a selfie stick, I would give Donald Trump a run for net worth. Seeing all these people climbing around and taking pictures made me wonder what this place was like before the invention of FaceBook or Instagram. Do more people visit national parks now just for the sake of taking a selfie and putting it online? As I sat in my little spot on the edge of the canyon waiting on sunset, I took some time to look around and observe the people around me. Guess it has to do with my sociology background. I think more people were looking at their phones than at the canyon. I heard one girl behind me say to her friends, “I don’t want to wait another 20 minutes for sunset. I am just going to walk back to the car and get on my phone. I can just look at FaceBook to see what sunset looks like”. I was amazed when I heard this. Here is one of natures most beautiful places and she would rather just look at it on FaceBook. Maybe in 20 years people will stop visiting places like this and just stick to looking at them on FaceBook or whatever the next big social media platform is, my bets on MySpace making a comeback, you hear me Tom, bring back MySpace!
