Devil’s Lair by Timothy Poulton

I’ve been reflecting on the difference between the image and the imagined, and the relationship of imagining to capturing. The technique of visualisation is a skill, you either have an image in your head, you’ve seen an image you love and want to give it your own style or you just arrive and hopefully let the magic happen. Simple visualisation skills may only involve considering the best angle to take a shot, or the sort of light that might bring the best out in a scene. I for one do my research, making sure the sun is at the right angle, the moon is at a certain phase, tides are primed for the best flow and of course being able to predict the weather by observing cloud formations is a skill that is somewhat lost on us modern humans. Most of us can easily look at a cloud and see the unicorn or ice cream cones, but very few of us can look at clouds and predict the conditions. What preparation works goes into your photography or are you just a free spirit and make the most of what you get.
