Erin Babnik, Rob Lafreniere and I had spent the night prior to this shooting this peak from a near by lake, which I quickly found to be pretty much hopeless due to a lack of preparedness. A good lesson on the importance of scouting, which I had neglected that day. We set out to shoot only moments before, and there I stood, at the edge of the lake, with no composition and deep frustration as the sky lit up orange and purple, in addition to lightning striking all around the peak. When we retreated in defeat that night, we decided that making our way further up the meadow towards Becco Di Mezzodi might provide better opportunities, and maybe, just maybe, we’d get a lucky evening of another passing lightning storm and great sunset light. No such luck, but, these dramatic passing clouds provided for a scene with a different type of appeal that I thought worked well with the palette of the land. The rich deep greens of the summer meadow and larches mixed with the subtle blues of thick clouds made for a serene scene that I quite like. I was drawn to this composition because of the two trees, which seem to be in some state of communication with the mountain. Reverence? Perhaps. Luckily the fortuitous arrangement of rocks, and a small splash of summer flowers right in the middle sealed the deal for me. If you ever visit this area, consider yourself warned. A zombie roams the land, in an eternal search for fresh brains. We ran into him that night, but were able to evade him with some fancy footwork. He is known locally as Rob Zombie. Watch out! Want to know how I made this: See detailed how-to on my Facebook page: www.facebook.com/ensrudphotography/ So….On a two week long visit to the area my goals were to capture many of the beautiful lighthouses along the North Sea in Germany and Denmark. This lovely lighthouse is on Sylt, a popular tourist destination, and getaway for wealthy Germans living in Hamburg, like the Hamptons for New Yorkers. Beautiful coastline, and great place. I rented a bike and cruised all around the island finding locations and capturing four of the five lighthouses on the island. I spent the night out in the sand dunes capturing the Milky Way and stars overhead and getting blasted by sand and salt water. 50+ mile an hour winds. :/
