Amidst the Mist by Janne Kahila

Hey all! I haven’t been too active lately but now I have a bunch of new images coming in from my recent trip to Scotland and the Faroe islands. A small story follows: This one is taken from a rather remote location in the amazing Faroe islands. It was a perfectly sunny day in the capital but when we squeezed our small car into a boat and approached the island of Kalsoy we realized that the very tip of this long and narrow island was covered in clouds and it was obviously raining heavily up there. And to get there we also had to drive through the four dark cramped and long tunnels (no wonder they call this island “the flute”) that pass through this island to get to the lighthouse in the northernmost tip but as we suspected we were greeted with heavy rain and zero visibility once we reached the location. Disappointed and beaten we geared up for the heavy rain and started to hike our way up the muddy hill and even saw the locals gathering up the hundreds of sheep for dewooling. I had lost any hope in getting a decent shot despite all the effort it took to get there.. Then just as we approached the lighthouse the rain suddenly stopped and the mist started to fade away and this picture-perfect scenery appeared in front of us – and we were the only ones there! This awesomeness lasted for some tens of minutes until the low clouds once again crawled in from the sea (you can actually see them approaching from the right).
I was quick with my photos and I managed to use this small window of visibility and made a three shot panorama to get the most of this view. And this photo only shows a small part of the view that was purely magical all around! So despite being a broad daylight and backlighting I really like this image. Maybe it is due to the trouble I had to go through to get the shot and the relief of timing my visit just right. That makes it all the more special. What do you think?
