It is not often I have the energy or motivation to go out for sunrises, but glad I did a few days ago. Tyrifjorden is Norway’s fifth largest lake. Sirui tripod and Lowepro backpack. Photoshop tutorials:

Ending The Year With Colour by The Narratographer

I decided to see the year out with a morning trip to Portland. During the drive to the coast, the sky did not look that inviting and I wondered if I would get anything worthy of editing, let alone uploading. The sky was dank and tired and did nothing to lift my spirits as I set up on the edge of the rocks. I took a few insipid images, whilst watching a photographer shoot images from the other side of the hollow and a fisherman set up just to my left. The morning was still and uninteresting and the sky, it seemed, was yet to wake up. It was shortly before I got this image that Rob, the photographer who had been working in front of me, came over to say hello. He set up besides me and we started chatting. He had more equipment than your local camera shop and whilst we discussed the finer points of camera filters, the morning finally got out of bed. The sky seemed to rip open with vibrance and the clouds bled colour. The colours you see in this and every other image from todays shoot are natural, a combination of the amazing display we witnessed and the effects of using very dark filters. It was a good way to end the photographic year, albeit at a place I and every other photographer have shot to death. Still, it is a little different from my previous attempts and I hope you find something about it you like.

Petrel Cove
South Australia The year is done and we’re moving on.
This was the last dawn for 2016 and hopefully, many more from 2017 to come! Petrel Cove is one of my favourite locations but I haven’t managed to get there in the last year. Hope I can get some good conditions there this year and hope you can wherever you are photographing too. Keepin’ it simple with this one as a single exposure.

Running workshops certainly doesn’t leave much room for personal creativity, so after a big year I was incredibly eager to escape the crowds and familiar places in exchange for somewhere off the grid. Last month I pursued this desire and spent some time solo in the remote wilderness of New Zealand, after gazing at maps for months. I didn’t want to over think the trip or have any pre conceived photographic ideas, but instead just let the place speak to me.
Reaching my destination, it was overwhelming how exceedingly beautiful and ‘raw’ the area was, much more rugged and lush than I could have predicted. Although this did indeed inhibit some of my planned routes (due to intensely thick beech forest), I found it humbling and an avenue that led me to explore other compositional possibilities, which was just what I was after. This image was captured on my first sunrise here as I attempted to climb one of the smaller peaks. My progress was slowed by clambering up boulders through waist, to chest-high scrub (something I had certainly not planned for). In typical Fiordland fashion, rain began to move in from the south west so I swallowed my pride and headed back down before I was engulfed in rain cloud for several hours.

This is the new year the new you. You can pass through another year, coasting on cruise control. Or you can step out of your comfort zone, trying things you have never done before, & make 2017 as the year that you elevate from where you are & soar high. Make it happen!
