The meerkat or suricate (Suricata suricatta) is a small carnivore belonging to the mongoose family. Meerkats score big time on the cute index, and I totally get that. They’re adorable little creatures that make adorable little sounds. I was fortunate to spend a few days with a [insert collective noun for meerkats here] of meerkats in Botswana a couple of years ago, and enjoyed every minute of it. Meerkats are perfectly snack-sized for most raptors, which explains why they’re always scanning to sky for impending doom. Their eyesight is amazing. One day they suddenly all stood up on their hind legs, looking at the horizon. I tried to see what was there, but couldn’t. Only after I while I thought I saw something moving, which appeared to be a jackal. So if you’re in the witness protection program, you should consider training a couple of these guys to give you a heads up when the mafia is tailing you. Just an idea 🙂 – – – If Botswana is on your bucket list, then I’ve got good news for you: we’ve got one space left on this year’s Botswana tour from 25 April to 5 May. We’ll be focusing our efforts on lion-buffalo interaction, and wild dogs, but we won’t pass on an opportunity to get some of these little critters too. We won’t be running this tour for a few years anymore, so this really is your best chance. If you’re interested, please check out our website for more information: www.squiver.com Hope to see you there! Marsel ©2016 Marsel van Oosten, All Rights Reserved.
