The Image Factory by The Narratographer
It’s no longer about photography, it’s about pictures. A picture is something you take on an iPhone. That is not to say that you cannot make something wonderful on a cheap camera, or camera phone; that is not my point. My point is the level of involvement that is encouraged. They do not want passion, they do not want art. They want something digestible, something that can easily be swallowed, without making them think too much. They want something that can hold their attention just long enough to click a little heart shaped icon, whilst they are waiting for the funny cat video to load. They want Instagram. Whereas photography used to be an art form of sorts, it has now become something incredibly transient. Nothing stands out as being truly amazing, everything blends into that which is around it. And let us not kid ourselves, it isn’t about quality and it never will be. It is all about popularity. Either by buying followers or by advertising yourself relentlessly, you build up a following not because of your creative eye, but because of your persistence. Persistence has its place, but should it ever dip its toes into the world of art? Now my work is fairly popular on here and I usually upload once per day. But I do not kid myself to think that my images are any better than anyone else’s. I have been here a few years, I have upload regularly. There are some people who leave this site because they cannot compete with those selling their editing abilities, or uploading every few hours with another image cloned from their last one. There are so many great photographers on here who get little or no attention, whilst some questionable ones dominate the front page. Success in photography is about frequency, not quality. And as I said earlier, this is not me suggesting that certain plaudits are not deserved. Of course they are. But it is just something that I have noticed over the years I have been a photographer, having watched people spend far more time on advertising their apparent skills than they ever do nurturing or improving them. Personally, I blame places like Instagram. We are encouraged to shoot, save and share, all without thinking about how we want people to see what we have photographed. It is all about getting it out there quickly, immediately. Photography is no longer a studio, it is a factory.

www.squiver.com I am very happy to share that I’ve won 3 Silver awards in the 2016 One Eyeland Awards, as well as a Bronze award in the overall Photographer Of The Year ranking. Most major nature photography competitions are judged by nature photographers, but at One Eyeland (and other likt the International Photography Awards) the jury consists primarily of art directors and creative directors from international ad agencies. These people have a completely different way of looking at things – and I know, because I used to be one of them 🙂 The work entered into this competition is not only nature related, so there is that difference as well, but overall I would say that the jury focuses more on aesthetics and visual effect, and less on story-telling and content, and there is zero interest in how the image was made. From an artistic point of view, I find this very refreshing, as most of you will know. Also, from the perspective of a professional photographer, it is a lot more beneficial to have a small army of art directors awarding your work than your peers – art directors may potentially hire you, your colleagues will not 🙂 I won two Silver awards for two landscape series that I shot in China, one black and white and one colour, and one Silver award for a single image from Svalbard. I’ll start with the black and white series. This first image is part of a series of four and it was shot in the Fujian province in China. There is a lot of aquaculture in this region, and it makes for very graphic photography. When I first saw an image from this area on the iPhone of a Chinese photographer on our scouting trip in China in 2015, I knew I had to go there. Next month we’ll be running our first official tour there, and I’m looking forward to getting some more of this stuff. – – – If you’d like to get shots like this yourself, then why not join us to China next month. We have one last minute opening, so this is your one chance! More info here: ow.ly/2UY8100z2YU Marsel WEBSITE | FACEBOOK | INSTAGRAM ©2017 Marsel van Oosten, All Rights Reserved. The Basilica of the Sacred Heart is one of the largest Roman Catholic churches in the world. I like to come here from time to time; There is always someting to see, has the most beautifull light and for a few euros you can go on top to have a really nice view over Brussels.
