Towards The Sun by Timothy Pou...
Towards The Sun by Timothy Poulton
Long before the beach was a theater of bodies stuffed into tiny suits, exposing as much skin as possible to the sun, beach-going was often a strictly medical undertaking. For centuries we looked to the sand and surf as a fully-stocked pharmacy. Spending 2 weeks in Norway without once feeling the sun I really suffered, and it was only after lazing around on my deck chair in the sun did I start to feel better. With all the talk of cancer and the damage, the sun does we miss out on its healing qualities. Keep your face always toward the sunshine – and shadows will fall behind you.

I decided to see the year out with a morning trip to Portland. During the drive to the coast, the sky did not look that inviting and I wondered if I would get anything worthy of editing, let alone uploading. The sky was dank and tired and did nothing to lift my spirits as I set up on the edge of the rocks. I took a few insipid images, whilst watching a photographer shoot images from the other side of the hollow and a fisherman set up just to my left. The morning was still and uninteresting and the sky, it seemed, was yet to wake up.
It was shortly before I got this image that Rob, the photographer who had been working in front of me, came over to say hello. He set up besides me and we started chatting. He had more equipment than your local camera shop and whilst we discussed the finer points of camera filters, the morning finally got out of bed. The sky seemed to rip open with vibrance and the clouds bled colour. The colours you see in this and every other image from todays shoot are natural, a combination of the amazing display we witnessed and the effects of using very dark filters.
It was a good way to end the photographic year, albeit at a place I and every other photographer have shot to death. Still, it is a little different from my previous attempts and I hope you find something about it you like.
