I’m pretty lucky get to live in a place where I can drive a few hours and look out over one of the most spectacular places on earth. It seems like the more I visit this place, the less I am enamored with the blazing sunsets I always wish to see and sometimes get to witness. I find myself gazing at the layers and depth of such a place. I rarely take the wide angle out at this place anymore, and this image kinda shows why. I see more people photographing this place trying to get every inch of the canyon into a frame losing some of the magic that lies within this great abyss. My go to lens of choice for this area is my 70-200, although, sometimes I wish I had something in between 28mm and 70mm. 70 usually does the trick and allows me to isolate specific scenes that jump out at me that others might not notice. With storms and moisture in the atmosphere along with some dust, the light within the canyon was about as good as it ever gets. Beautiful swaths of gold and orange cascading down layers of massive buttes. As the sun progressed a little lower, the dust and moisture mix began creating these incredible beams of light cresting over the ridges. These sights and scenes inspire me more and more every time, and I am often looking for ways to use the longer lenses during my travels. The light was a much needed boost to keep me inspired as of late.
