Golden city architecture by Venelin Venelinov
Sofia offers a surprising architectural mix spanning from ancient Byzantine churches to modern office buildings. Deciphering the mosaic of architectural styles visible throughout the city is a pleasant exercise that requires some knowledge of Bulgarian history. Here is a brief guide. In the years before national independence, Sofia was a home to less than 12,000 inhabitants and had two schools, seven churches, 30 mosques, and 3,300 houses. The city had played a secondary role in the Bulgarian Revival, and never had the Bulgarian Revival architectural masterpieces that are typical for the rest of the country. Western travelers arriving to Sofia in the 18th and 19th centuries left less than favorable descriptions of mud-covered, dark, narrow streets and ruined city walls. In 1879, it was all about to change. After Sofia was chosen for the capital of the newly independent Bulgaria, architects from Central Europe were commissioned to work on the new capital. In the course of a few decades Sofia turned into a distinctively European city that its ever-increasing inhabitants lovingly called “the little Vienna.”

A more modern classical take on the lovely scene from a couple weeks back. It’s not often that I shoot this late after sunrise but the fog and veiled clouds kept the light soft and showcased the nice color pallet of the scene.

Sitting there, I imagine the world that I have before my eyes. Admiring the beautiful islet that endures there, I see, in fact, a delicious pile of pancakes that, quickly, will be bathed by that golden light of the Sun that actually seems to me to be honey to sweeten my mind even more! It is then that I glimpse real paths along the lines that come out of the wonderful rocks that I have closer to me! They look like a road towards paradise I think! I am already ecstatic with all this spartan beauty that I have before me when my eyes join one structure to the other.
They are seeing something, it is a comma. A comma? Asks my brain a little bit confused. And I realized. In fact, all these lines are from books accumulated in time, with beautiful poems written by the sky, through clouds and inlaid with an exquisite light! And so our life goes on, with layers and commas that, instead of separating, they connect all the moments from the least good to the ones we like to remember the most! Making this path that is life something extraordinary!

“Life-giving water”...
“Life-giving water” by Irina Dzhul
“Life-giving water” The clean source that feeds everything around. This is the character I wanted to photograph. Thanks to Alina that with her energy, gentleness, and femininity helped to bring all this to life. “Water is in constant motion – just like life. Water nourishes the flora and fauna, giving life. Water cleans, washing away dirty particles. She has one name, but many looks. Water can be steam and rise up, or it can be solid, becoming ice. In the same way, the soul can strive for perfection, hovering over the low-lying, and can become like a swamp or become cold, like ice. Water can be cold and hot, dirty and clean, solid – ice, liquid and weightlessly soar in the sky with a cloud, water circulates between heaven and earth. As well as human emotions can be sublime and base, the soul can be cold as ice and glow like fire with passions or love.” Anna Benu The strength of the water is soft, but it sharpens the stone.
