Color Guard by Ryan Dyar

A frigid winter morning on the southern slopes of Oregon’s Mount Hood from the White River. Some of the most interesting and intense light I’ve ever had to privilege to photograph. It wasn’t until the next day when I went to solo-backpack TDH Mountain that I realized I had left my fairly spendy MSR snowshoes and poles in the parking lot to the White River after getting back from shooting this shot. Anger was felt, expletives spewed, and self loathing ensued. Oh, well… always something, eh? Anyways, I recently released my 3rd instructional video on my approaches to processing. People seem to really be enjoying them and have had nothing but great things to say, so I *think* they are helping people… it’s been awesome to see the many before/after shots people have been emailing me. Be sure to check the videos out if you are into that sort of thing. It’s all on my website, as well as more photos, photo tour info, processing instruction via Skype like everyone else is doing, etc, etc. I’m also SUPER excited to be teaming up with Arild Heitmann to lead a tour through Norway’s Lofoten Islands to chase some some Aurora and the long hours of golden arctic light. The tour only has 3 spots left, so if you’re interested, be sure to check it out soon! Ryan Dyar Photography.

Among all the things I love about landscape photography, the thing I have loved most is the people I’ve met along the way. This is actually weird for me, because I’m not a people person at my core. Truth be told, there are very few people I truly enjoy being around. I met up with Tula and Paul on a wet and foggy Saturday morning to shoot Spirit Falls. Two awesome guys that were a genuine pleasure to be around. Space is limited down at Spirit Falls, but it isn’t quite that big of a deal when you’re shooting with polite people. Paul was even so nice as to suggest that I not scale a vertical, slippery rock face, because I might die. This shot is by no means groundbreaking and the falls were low, so there wasn’t much to work with, but all in all, it was a great time.

www.silentgphotography.com It’s not very often I’ve seen photos with famous Kirkjufell Pk out of frame, but having this all to ourselves for so long offered so many opportunities for different views during the never-ending sunset.

Hiking on a glacier is like walking on a globe. You can see the horizon but it is not getting any closer. It was exactly how I felt when I was hiking across the Turner Glacier on Baffin Island. The route took me hours. It was my longest 15 kilometers ever, mainly because I was carrying 2 weeks of supplies tightly packed in my backpack and I was making my way through 30 centimeters of fresh snow.
When I reached the point suitable for my basecamp, I set up my tent in the middle of the glacier with spectacular views of surrounding peaks. The Auyuittuq National Park is a home to some of the most remarkable mountains and cliff faces on the Earth. Mt. Asgard featured on this shot is undoubtedly one of its crown jewels.
This picture was taken a few hundred meters away from my base camp. I was enjoying this view for 3 days that I stayed there. The weather changing from snowstorm to clear sky created a spectacular light show. I could sit and goggle at Mt. Asgard forever. Unfortunately the cold weather prohibited me from sitting still. I had to be on a constant move to avoid frostbites.
The photo showcases the famous north face of the double cylindrical towers of the Mount Asgard. It stands 1600 meters from the glacier and features 1200 meters of vertical wall.
Note: The foreground featured in the glacier is not a crevasse. It is one of many channels in the glacier carved by water coming from a thawed ice in the summer.
