Online Processing Instruction Golden evening light and wind on the dunes of Death Valley, California. No orton here, that’s just the glow of blowing back/side-lit sand. I know, “another” dune shot. But these are the conditions I had always hoped for, and never gotten, at the dunes. Wind was forecast for this particular evening, so I made sure to be there. The way blowing sand glows and catches light is pretty amazing, and I was fortunate enough to find this dynamic composition before the light was gone, along with the wind. The wind certainly could have been better, so I won’t call it quits on shooting dunes just yet – but it did enough for this image to make it stand out among my own dune shots, at least. This is one of my two favorite dune images, the other being the quieter “Nocturne of Shadow” from last year.

Ynys Llanddwyn Lighthouse by Andi Campbell-Jones
One from the weekends trip to Snowdonia and Anglesey. This one is from Ynys Llanddwyn Island on Anglesey, UK. We were hoping for an epic sunset, but ended up with an ok one. A little bit of a trek to get to this from the carpark (which is chargeable) by walking up the beach. Also the Island is cut off at high tide.

Becco Di Mezzodi by Ted Gore
Becco Di Mezzodi by Ted Gore
To stay up to date with me and get the first announcements for workshops and other offerings, please join my mailing list HERE Becco di Mezzodi in the Italian dolomites. Erin Babnik, Rob Lafreniere and I had spent the night prior to this shooting this peak from a near by lake, which I quickly found to be pretty much hopeless due to a lack of preparedness. A good lesson on the importance of scouting, which I had neglected that day. We set out to shoot only moments before, and there I stood, at the edge of the lake, with no composition and deep frustration as the sky lit up orange and purple, in addition to lightning striking all around the peak. When we retreated in defeat that night, we decided that making our way further up the meadow towards Becco Di Mezzodi might provide better opportunities, and maybe, just maybe, we’d get a lucky evening of another passing lightning storm and great sunset light. No such luck, but, these dramatic passing clouds provided for a scene with a different type of appeal that I thought worked well with the palette of the land. The rich deep greens of the summer meadow and larches mixed with the subtle blues of thick clouds made for a serene scene that I quite like. I was drawn to this composition because of the two trees, which seem to be in some state of communication with the mountain. Reverence? Perhaps. Luckily the fortuitous arrangement of rocks, and a small splash of summer flowers right in the middle sealed the deal for me. If you ever visit this area, consider yourself warned. A zombie roams the land, in an eternal search for fresh brains. We ran into him that night, but were able to evade him with some fancy footwork. He is known locally as Rob Zombie. Watch out! Thanks for looking!
