Tasmania This shot was taken after a day of constant rain which really brought a drying forest to life and the flow of water back to an area really in need of it. The title refers to something about photographs I feel is nice to read about but something that people don’t necessarily need to demand. There are a couple of things about this image that I personally would like to tell you about. 1. The top section of the falls was vertically distorted to not appear quite so much like it’s leaning.
2. I couldn’t get the desired reflection of the falls easily from this angle so the midground is a partial post process reflection. Bear in mind that a competition like ANZANG would want me to disclose:
1. It’s a focus stack
2. Selective colour enhancement as occurrs on the leaves and moss
3. There has been orton introduced
4. There has been local dodge and burn rather than global adjustment. Some other may yet wish for the disclose that; 1. I used photoshop
2. I edited it at all! The flip side about non disclosure is that many have an arbitrary list of what is and isn’t acceptable . This applies to photographers and the general public. When by chance, an aspect of an image is ‘revealed’ to be a manipulation, (often, I suspect by a keyboard warrior with a triumphant ‘aha!’ who actually likes the image but who struggles to create similar material for themselves) the hue and cry that ensues is an exaggeration of a polite conversation that would otherwise occur in a physical gallery .Such are some of the wonders of the safety-last environment of cyberspace. It does however breed an environment of skepticism whereby images are looked at with doubt the moment anything that seems ‘to good to be true’ is presented. What is too good to be true oft isn’t ‘true’ (however you define that word). I personally hold on to the value that photography in all of its aspects should lean more toward a representation of moments rather than a representation of imagination. But that probably reflects a scientific upbringing of linear thought processes. Others use photographs to create art akin to other artistic media. In the last couple of years I have found myself striving very hard to create images that are beautiful and have done manipulations where the light isn’t representative and indeed elements of the scene have been changed. The resultant images may be beautiful but in the end, am I shooting myself in the foot for removing an aspect of photography that separates itself from all other forms of art? That is, its ability to capture authentic moments right there and then. I’ll ponder upon this a little, but for now, I’m enjoying stripping back the approach and presenting what I experienced at that time.

Was made with a Sony NEX camera and a Samyang 8mm lens handheld a few millimeters near the mount, unfortunately at wide angle lenses the focus movement is very small and is impossible to fit a macro ring.

The life of a landscape photographer is always dependent on the weather, the atmosphere and light. Motivation and determination is still there .. The hardest part is being in the right place at the right time! It would be impossible to calculate the hours of waiting or the number of times I’ve been some places hoping to capture something special. That night I left to do some pictures in the Thingvellir park but my car broke down.
Fortunately, I could count on my photographer friend and neighbor Vincenzo Mazza who came to help me in this mishap.
I’d like to thank him because without his crucial help I could not have taken this picture. Thermometer announced – 13 degrees but it was a warm moment 😉 Bruarfoss, Thingvellir Park, Iceland. I love when weather is cold and I mean really cold – when thermometer shows 20 below zero and freezing cold wind blows, the kind that almost feels like it cuts into your skin. That’s when it is highly unlikely to meet someone when walking at the beach. Maybe someone like myself, who enjoys these conditions, but that is quite rare. Of course, when conditions are difficult, that also means that taking pictures becomes more difficult. Getting the right composition, placing the filters – it all takes time – which feels much longer when adjusting setting without gloves in these temperatures. In this case, there was thick steam above water. When some of it fell on my filters, it froze immediately, so I had to clean the filters after every picture. Getting the ice off of glass was time consuming but the light changes with every minute and it is possible to just miss the perfect conditions. Not before looking through the pictures at home, I am able to tell whether I got something I am pleased with or not. However, during this season it is so interesting that no two mornings are the same. And if the light is different then it is possible to get dramatically different pictures from same location. That is why I always try to go out shooting with that kind of cold. Even spots that are photographed a thousand times, may look unrecognizable and offer completely different challenges.

Click here to follow me on Facebook and here to follow my Instagram account. ‘TANGERINE DREAMS’ I’ve seen a few interesting looking sunrises in Dubai in my days, but this one was very much unique. I was particularly intrigued by the strange low clouds and the fog which seems to have divided the sky into the night and day like an invisible membrane. What an incredible feast for the eyes!
This is a handheld panorama, assembled from 2 individual, single exposures, captured from the rooftop of the Shangri-La Hotel on the Sheikh Zayed Road in Dubai.
The light was so amazing and the contrast was well controlled, so I didn’t feel it was needed to work on the Dynamic Image Blending or any other advanced post-processing technique, other than colour grading. I used the ever-reliable Canon 5D MK III and Canon TS-E 17mm f/4L Tilt-Shift Lens lens. Processed with Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom and Nik Software on a custom built, Windows 10 powered PC. As usual, I worked on the Wacom Intuos Pro pressure sensitive tablet.
