The Watchman – Crater La...
The Watchman – Crater Lake National Park, Oregon by Dave Morrow
In March of 2014 Paul Weeks & I took an overnight backpacking / snowshoe trip to Crater Lake’s Watchman Tower ( 7881 feet tall ). During the night we stayed up and took photos of the night sky. With hardly any wind and a high pressure system siting over the area we were able to setup our sleeping bags and camping mats right on the snow and lay out under the stars. It ended up being around 25 degrees F that night which isn’t bad inside a 0 degree down bag:) This specific image comes from sunset the night before. A clear western horizon and slight haze in the east made for colorful & soft backlight during sunset. It was created using 3 horizontal images stitched together in Photoshop to show the entire crater. The 2,148-footdeep caldera that was formed around 7,700 years ago when the Mount Mazama volcano collapsed. There is no water flow into or out of Crater Lake. All water is evaporated and recycled by rainfall, clouds and snow. The width is 5-6 miles across depending on where the measurements are taken from. This shot was tricky to take. It was very windy, raining from time to time, dark stormy skies, etc. etc. My gear took some “abuse” but survived just fine. What I wanted to capture here was the highlighted wave (preferably the crash of it) with wave-spray illuminated by the sun. I kind of achieve that…. Similarly to my other shots I took hundreds of them to get something I liked, like this shot. Try looking at it from some distance, the bright middle spot/wave really pops up.
View it on black too….
