WANAKA TREE CHALLENGE I love it when travel websites refer to the willow tree in Wanaka as ‘That Hidden Gem’ just follow the line of photographers all the way to Fergburger in Queenstown and you’ll find it. At sunrise you can see all the headlamps from space waiting for that first light, it’s that popular. I find most locations get a little boring after a few visits but this tree and location has a zen-like appeal, maybe it’s the hilarious shit that goes on whenever I’m there that makes it so addictive. You have to admit, it’s a pretty sweet composition for anyone into photography and is almost everyones bucket list. Taken last fall during my trip to the Canadian Rockies with my good friend Sean Bagshaw. We almost didn’t visit Moraine Lake, because it’s photographed so often, but I’d never been there and I wanted to see it for myself. The sunrise behind us was spectacular, so much so that the reflected light from it illuminated the scene in a beautiful magenta light. I created this image using the techniques covered in my latest instructional video. In the video I illustrate how I use the powerful tools and techniques available in Lightroom and Photoshop along with the TKActions V4 Panel to achieve an incredible level of control throughout my workflow.
