Jebel Shams or the Sun Mountain is the highest mountain in Oman at a height of 3005 meters.
The story of the Jebel starts with the formation of a sea called Tethys, formed when Oman and Iraq parted. In Oman sediments were deposited in relatively shallow water, which later formed the very hard grey limestone found on the jebel. The sea was warm and rich in life, and many fossils can be found throughout the region.
As Tethys was created, submarine volcanoes were formed; the magma from these has turned some of the limestone to marble. When the Tethys Sea began to close about 90,000,000 years ago, the ocean floor was pushed over the land, forming the mountain.
After the formation of the mountain, water erosion has shaped the “ Grand Canyon”, with a vertical drop of 2,100 meters from the summit to the base.
During the winter season, we will run a workshop there of 7 days tour all over Oman

This beautiful building, wich is located in the „Hafencity“, a distric of Hamburg, was rented by a german newspaper called „Der Spiegel“. „Spiegel“ is translated into English as „Mirror“. This fits perfectly with the beautiful reflection of the sunset in the windows of the building. Indeed a real mirror. The title to this photo is from a great smooth soul song from William Bell (1984). If you have the chance, listen to it. Have a great weekend!

Right after the incredible session with milky way reflections at flooded Uyuni salt flats (see my previous posts) we headed back to Uyuni town.
But the night wasn’t over yet. We made a stop at train cemetery to make some more astrophotography. My group was on the road for more than 20 hours this day, but we endured and made some more nice photos, as this place looked so magical in the night…
