Lake Oberon
Tasmania This is another moment of light from the Western Arthurs that we all enjoyed. It brings up the question of whether you ever feel you’ve been comp-stomped or whether you’ve actually comp stomped someone else? This definitely isn’t an original composition but I personally try not to worry myself with this because of the full story below (if you want to read) [The everlook action and other tutorials]
[Freebies!] The area above Lake Oberon from the Northwest is where most of these shots are taken. There are several different ‘coves’ to shoot from but this one probably has the most abundant pandani with a view of both Pegasus mountains. The one to the right of this has a great King Billy, the one to the left of this is what I shot 2 images back, and the one furthest to the left is the route of descent where Dombroviskis’s shot of the famous 3 pandani lies. All are intersected with with little ‘goat’ paths or pads. This series of shots was actually taken on my 4th foray up here where we happened to have the best light. On the first, I shot some daylight shots of the entrance. One the second, I passed on shooting here as I knew that Luke Tscharke, Dylan Gehlken and Chris Wiewiora had shot from here and was keen find another aspect. (The images from those guys were really in my mind , what’s set this area as a ‘go to’ spot for many landscape photographers I know of. Check em out if you haven’t seen them before!) That was a clear morning where sunstars were on offer. The third, was a sunset where I shot primarily Square Lake and then explored the other coves before darkness and had chance to scout other comps. This final morning was shot with everyone on the scene so compositions were limited to not being in each others shots and sharing compositions of which this was one of three I had found the previous evening. In this cove, these 3 pandani stand out as you walk in , so it’s a natural composition. I don’t carry around images of other people’s shots as references (do other people really do this?) so any ‘exact’ composition that may result from other people’s images is just natural composition of the same scene. I was also limited in my plan B and plan C compositions as the others had taken up position there, leaving me 1 option at any given time (Luke and I moved around a bit that morning). I ended up shooting 2-3 different compositions for the morning. So my message is this. Next time your mind wants to accuse someone of ‘compstomping’, particularly a deliberate effort to do so, you’re making a lot of assumptions. It’s safer not to assume that was the photographers’ intent, and just think how ‘great minds’ and ‘great eyes’ see alike 🙂 The positive route leads to less angst all round ! And of course, assume can be spellled ass-u-me .

Negative ions by Pierre Pelli

Here the last shot that i did with my daughter. We found one of thoose many rills which flow into the main river. She usually takes her nap at home, but this evening, she didnt want to sleep. She has difficult sleep. So i put her on my back and bring her with me. Once we arrived on this little waterfall i couldnt climb on the sliding rocks with her on my back. So i put her down, and attached the carrier to a tree with a rope and a carabiner. You can find a short video of that on my Instagram.
The sound of water and the negative ions have put her to sleep. There is a large amount of negative ions close to waterfalls, and they are supposed to be good for health and mind. All i know is that i like to be near the waterfalls.
So i’ve been able to make my differents shots, and she took a very good nap! It is a panorama, made of 4 vertical shots. For each vertical shot i took 2 exposure at F8 and one at F22 to have the smmoth effect on the water. I had a good time blending all of this, making my base image. Then, i made my color adjustements and stuff like that. I’ve kept that misty atmosphere who was here in the forest this evening. I hope you will like it. anyway, let me know what you think about it. Thank you – Peace
