This view captures the Sentinel Mesa, The Merrick’s Butte, the West and East Mitten Butte, from left to right in that order. The cloud over the West Mitten Butte looks like a chimney with smoke coming out of it .

Actually, I was a little nervous. Scooted down a fallen log to get into the middle of the falls. I’d do it again in a heartbeat. Lewis River Falls. Have a fantastic week. Don’t let fear dictate your future. “This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9

This is an area of the grand canyon I have wanted to see for many years. It is one of the few where you get a great view of the Colorado River, but also one of I believe two locations you can see the Little Colorado meet the Colorado River. The other beeing on the plateau on the upper left horizon. After a relatively decent sunset, I awoke early in the morning when the sun was still well below the horizon. I could see the clouds building over the canyon and the horizon to the east looking pretty clear. This usually is a recipe for a great sunrise. I decided to head out to the edge in the faint twilight glow and set up my composition and wait for the light. It was pretty cold on this morning, and some slight breezes made it even more chilly. With the cloud structure moving faster than I was hoping, I decided to take some long exposure scenes which usually capture light not seen at the moment. This particular scene was shot during a 20 second exposure. I could see the pastel colors even with the naked eye, but when I saw the LCD screen light up I was even more impressed by the colors that showed up. As the exposure times decreased and the sun made it’s way to the horizon I watched as rain fell in the canyon illuminated in orange and pink hues. With the progressing clouds overhead, the direct light on the canyon turned into dappled light making the canyon appear as if it was underwater. It was a wonderful morning and was even treated to some wildlife on the drive out.

Hoarfrost by Marsel van Oosten
Hoarfrost by Marsel van Oosten
This was shot earlier this year on our Where Dragons Roam tour in China. The location is called Yellow Mountain and the conditions couldn’t have been more magical – fog and hoarfrost. Because of the fog the view was limited, but the fog was constantly moving so different parts of the landscape were revealed and then disappeared again. In conditions like this, everything looks amazing and scenes you would normally walk past without paying attention, suddenly look spectacular. If you would like to join us on our 2019 Where Dragons Roam landscape photography tour to China, then please check out the info below. – – – Where Dragons Roam
