simonxuphotography.smugmug.com/ The tide was rising as the sun is setting but not for at least another hour or so. I do not want to leave the tripod as the wave may swept it away. So I ended up standing there forever as the waves after waves pounded the rocks relentlessly’ Submerged in the knee-high water with no place to move, my legs became numb. But just as the sun was about to set into the horizon, some lacelike fine clouds showed up in the warm orange/pink colors. The seagulls were happy. Finally, I got the shot I envisioned as a magnificent wave hitting the rock head-on illuminated by the setting sun on the other end, making a big splash. I am happy but so tired in the end that I felt lucky not slip, fall and being swept way. “I shall return to see the dawn of another day, I shall do battle again and again …”

Timing is everything. Whether you photograph landscapes or wildlife, you need to be there at the right time. But when is the right time? That’s the one million dollar question that’s right at the start of any project I do. The answer depends on many factors, but the most important one is: what do you want? When we were planning our first trip to the Yellow Mountain (which isn’t all that yellow) in China, I knew I wanted to get mist. And possibly snow. But mist was my #1 priority, so I had to figure out what would be the best time of year to get the highest chance of mist. Too early in the season, and it’ll be too cold and your only chance is snow (which is pretty cool too), and too late in the season and you’re either standing in the pouring rain the entire day, or you’ll be looking at the blue sky of death more often than not. I decided to visit the twilight zone – might get snow, might get mist, might get both. So far this strategy has paid off. This year is going to be our third year running our Where Dragons Roam landscape photography tour in China, and we have had snow and mist. But whatever we get, it’s all awesome. It’s amazing what a little bit of snow or mist does to a landscape that’s already mind-blowingly beautiful. This was shot on a late morning shoot, after heavy snowfall. The sun was starting to appear, and the wind was blowing the snow off the branches – a magical sight. Can’t wait to go back there! Inside Iran – IV by Marsel van Oosten

Our last trip in 2018 was our Pure Persia photo tour to Iran, and it’s been an amazing mix of landscape, culture and architecture photography – by far the most diverse trip we’ve ever run. And what a trip it was. Sure, the landscapes are incredible and the architecture is mind blowing, but what has made the biggest impression on me, are the people. Iranians are by far the friendliest and most welcoming people I have ever encountered on my travels. Many of those Iranians are part of the Instagram community, and the amount of welcome messages I have received from them is heartwarming and humbling. Some of you have even tried to meet up with me in Iran. Everywhere I go, Iranians welcome me to their country, their city or their home. To all Iranians: thank you for an unforgettable experience.
