Alternative bus on Canal Grande, Venice by Nicolas Barison

Gondola drivers going towards Santa Maria della Salute (English: Saint Mary of Health), commonly known simply as the Salute on Canal Grande. This is a Roman Catholic church and minor basilica located at Punta della Dogana in the Dorsoduro sestiere of the city of Venice, Italy. It stands on the narrow finger of Punta della Dogana, between the Grand Canal and the Giudecca Canal, at the Bacino di San Marco, making the church visible when entering the Piazza San Marco from the water. The Salute is part of the parish of the Gesuati and is the most recent of the so-called plague churches. In 1630, Venice experienced an unusually devastating outbreak of the plague. As a votive offering for the city’s deliverance from the pestilence, the Republic of Venice vowed to build and dedicate a church to Our Lady of Health (or of Deliverance, Italian: Salute). The church was designed in the then fashionable baroque style by Baldassare Longhena, who studied under the architect Vincenzo Scamozzi. Construction began in 1631. Most of the objects of art housed in the church bear references to the Black Death. The dome of the Salute was an important addition to the Venice skyline and soon became emblematic of the city, inspiring artists like Canaletto, J. M. W. Turner, John Singer Sargent, and the Venetian artist Francesco Guardi.

And then, you arrive up there.
The gods seem to be punishing you as the fog is really strong. As I couldn’t see more than two meters ahead of me, I told to my companion. Let’s keep going, maybe, just maybe… And then, after a good walk, the dissipation of the clouds showed us another planet, an idyllic place that I couldn’t believe that it was real!
But it was! Pico do Arieiro is one of the highest peaks of Portugal and it is in the beautiful Madeira Island!

Coming out of the water and leaving his strong footprints marked on the soft, radiant green moss, which had seen him arrive, the giant turned his back on the Sun and went on his way, sad, misunderstood and lonely. He tried to think what was the reason why he always had to be so big and strong, he wanted to understand why he, being a giant, could not suffer, be sensitive and need for love or just some affection. The sun seemed to try to shine even brighter to get his attention. He was very proud of his giant, of his strength and did not seem to understand why the giant was going away from him. The Sun kept, through its light, beautiful and magnetic, trying to call on him. He needed the great and imposing giant he always admired to explain to him why was he like that? what was happening to his ancient friend and partner? And the giant? He just wanted to have nothing to explain and for his beloved Sun to understand everything.
