A large haboob or dust storm rolls across the desert north of Casa Grande, Arizona as seen from Highway 387. Minutes after this photo was taken there was zero visibilty as we were overtaken by the wall of dirt.

Follow me on Facebook ///Best viewed on black/// A picture can be powerful when it is embedded with stories or an unforgettable experience that it freezes in time for us to share with others and re-live the memories. The person that has inspired and taught me everything about photography and the wilderness, Marc Adamus stands in the distance like an angel of light. The 16-35 produced an interesting looking sunstar that I think works really well here. This image may not be for everyone but to me it’s special and that’s why I really wanted to nail down the processing. It was quite a challenge and I want to thank both Ted Gore and Alex Noriega for guiding me.This was the last workable image taken from my Canon 6D and the 16-35mm lens that I really loved before the day me, Marc and my buddy Weihao got submerged by the huge rogue wave that hit us near the coast of Oregon. All of us lost our gear to the Ocean. It was a day I will never forget. We all felt the Ocean’s fury slide and drag us along the slippery rocks that were covered with sharp mussels. As soon as I opened my eyes, I saw Marc’s face and he helped me stand up. It was one of the most adventurous moment I have ever experienced in my life. Even though I lost my gear, I felt “alive” and stronger. This one is for you Marc. I still owe you that lunch/dinner we talked about when you come back to SF.

Dark Energy by Alex Noriega

This is one of a few images I’m pretty stoked about from backpacking around the Northwest this summer: Mount Rainier during a stormy sunset, rising high above passing thunderheads. I shot this with my girlfriend Erin last month. For educational purposes and in the interest of full disclosure, here are the exposures that were needed: one for the sky, one for the land, and two for the lightning strikes (which were necessary as separate exposures at f/4, because the strikes weren’t showing up in my base f/16 exposures with all the other light in the scene). If you would like to learn how I achieve the look of my images, you’re in luck! I teach my processing workflow and techniques online.
