Candles are an age old traditional part of Buddhist rituals. In conjunction with incense and flowers, candles are placed in front of Buddhist shrines or statues and images of the Buddha as a mark of respect. They are often accompanied by offerings of food and drink. The light of the burning candle flame represents the light of the Buddha’s teachings. Candles and incense also evoke the state of impermanence and change .The light from a candle can also be said to symbolize the enlightenment of the Buddha. Last evening I encountered one of the locals up here at the lake. He could relate that his grandparents lived in the red cabin during WWII. One day his grandfather, who was a lumberman, wanted to bring his shotgun with him to the woods, but his wife (the storyteller’s grandma) wouldn’t let him. That day he encountered Germans in the forest. If he had carried a gun he would have been imprisoned most likely in the infamous Grini prison. The Germans were looking for some Russians who were hiding in the hills around the lake. The Russians had escaped by jumping off a train not far from here.
