All That Gliiters by Timothy Poulton

It goes without saying that hiking or (tramping, as it is known locally), is a major highlight of any visit to New Zealand and the Hooker Valley is at the top of the list. Mount Cook is New Zealand’s highest mountain, towering above it’s spiny brethren in the southern alps. Climbing to the top of it is not the sort of thing one tackles as a day jaunt – this is serious mountain climbing country which has been tackled by world famous climbers such Edmund Hillary. However, you can get some epically rewarding day hiking achieved around the base of this mountain, starting from the Mount Cook village. One walk that stands out in this area is the walk to the lake at the foot of one of Mount Cook’s glaciers, a two – three hour return walk that crosses snow covered boulder fields and a number of glacially fed startlingly blue rivers. The walk isn’t particularly tough, other than being potentially slippy due to snow and ice, but the views are absolutely mind blowing, as Mount Cook looms over you, with snow coated mountains all around.

Balance by Lizzy Gadd

I’ve spent the last few weeks unplugged for the most part, exploring outdoors, sleeping outdoors, and simply being outdoors. I always forget how healing it feels for my soul, until I’m back indoors plunked in front of a computer filled with neglected emails and messages and news stories I’d rather not hear, and my heart yearns to run back out the door and live in the mountains in ignorant bliss. And honestly, I would live a hermit forever in the wilderness if I didn’t have to return for chocolate re-stocks and maybe a cup of coffee. But really… Trying to find the balance to tread on both sides gets to me sometimes. I realize nature doesn’t need me, but I need nature. And I don’t want to need civilization, but sometimes I wonder if maybe civilization needs me, and what I can offer, what each of us can offer. I try to carry that certain peace I find in nature, and like to hope it can radiate into others lives as I have been lucky enough for nature to do with mine. I’m one to be drained quickly by the human world, but there is still so much beauty and potential beauty everywhere I look. So onward I go. A foot on both sides.
