Mexico and the music world on Monday mourned the death of legendary singer Juan Gabriel, who touched millions with wrenching ballads of love and loneliness as he rose from the rough streets of Ciudad Juarez to a world stage. The singer, known as the "Divo of Juarez," died of a heart attack Sunday at his home in Santa Monica, California during a break in his latest tour. Other hits followed, songs that many Mexicans know by heart — including "Hasta Que Te Conoci" (Until I Met You), "Asi Fue" (That's How It Was), "Abrazame Muy Fuerte" (Embrace Me Tightly) and "Amor Eterno" (Eternal Love).

Mexico's top selling singer-songwriter, he was adored throughout Latin America, Spain and Hispanic communities in the United States for his heartfelt ballads and joyous mariachi tunes. Juan Gabriel, who had a heart attack in Santa Monica on Sunday, delighted packed auditoriums across the world with his flamboyant dress sense — sequined costumes, a cape and a perfectly coiffed pompadour — as well as his energetic stage persona.

Alberto Aguilera Valadez, who used the stage name Juan Gabriel, "died at 11:30 local time of a heart attack," Televisa reported. With more than 1,000 gold, platinum and multiplatinum albums to his credit, Gabriel had the attack at his home in Santa Monica, Televisa said.
